Life is hard. Reach out for help.
anxiety and depression
One in four people will experience significant anxiety in their lifetime, and one in five people will experience depression. You are not alone. Often times, the way we think affects how we feel. It may seem like changing your thoughts and feelings should be easy, but in reality it can be a challenge. Maybe you have tried therapy, medication, self-help books, or exercise, yet you still slip into worries about the future or regrets about the past. It is time for a solution that works in the long run. We will integrate techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, and mentalization-based treatment to gain a deeper understanding of how your mind works and what to do when problems arise. You will have the power to change your experience in the moment.
Borderline Personality disorder, Personality disorders, and emotion dysregulation
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has the best prognosis of all the major mental health challenges. You may have tried treatment before. You might be feeling like you will always ‘be this way.’ Your relationships seem to alternate between hot and cold. It feels overwhelming to try again and again and get the same results. It is time for a specialty treatment that works. Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is the only specialty treatment for BPD that has published 8-year outcomes. It works in the long run. Five years after treatment, MBT clients were less likely to have a diagnosis of BPD, less likely to take psychiatric medication, less likely to be hospitalized and visit emergency rooms, less likely to have made suicide attempts, and were more likely to have jobs or be in school. No other specialty treatment for BPD has demonstrated these longterm results. It’s time for a treatment that can truly help.
ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE USE RECOVERY
Alcohol use and addiction are complicated problems. They affect every part of your life. You might be trying to stop or moderate alcohol and/or substance use, and it is not working. Maybe family or friends have asked you to stop. Maybe you did not like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) when you tried it, or did not know how to relate to it. Maybe you are not sure what you want. These thoughts and feelings can be overwhelming and confusing. You do not need to do this alone anymore. I hear you. We will establish your individual needs and personalize a treatment that works for you.
Although we will figure out the right approach for you, one popular treatment approach is twelve-step facilitation (TSF). TSF is designed to help someone abstain from alcohol and drugs by helping them connect and participate in 12-step mutual-help groups. TSF has significant benefits in achieving full remission over alcohol and substance use. TSF has produced results that are equal to, and possibly better than, other treatments.
You might already be in recovery and want a deeper understanding of yourself. You may already attend AA and have a sponsor. You might be actively working the steps. Let’s help you grow even more. Techniques from mentalization-based treatment (MBT) will help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences in recovery. MBT will help you clarify your goals, values, and wishes. MBT and your journey in recovery will help you make deep and meaningful choices for the direction of your life.
Identity
Identity is the set of memories, values, reasons, wishes, beliefs, and purposes that create our sense of self. You might be looking to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships. You might feel like you are constantly changing yourself to fit the social situation you are in. Or, you are working too hard to please the people in your life. You may have a strong sense of who you are, and are trying to figure out your next steps in relationships, school, or work. Or, you might feel like you are not sure what you value. Mentalization-based treatment and acceptance and commitment therapy are designed to help you clarify your wishes, reasons, beliefs, intentions, and values. They will help you understand how you relate to yourself and others. They will help you clarify your direction in life. You will have the power to choose your behaviors and actions with intention.

Edward Patzelt, PhD
Welcome! Thank you for visiting.
My therapy and assessment approach is based on respect for you as a person, and what you are going through right now. I work to create a genuine and hopeful environment. Therapy will be focused on your present concerns, and will be a process of guided discovery. I aim to help you gain awareness and understanding of your patterns of thinking and feeling, and how this affects your behavior and choices. Through our work together your relationships will improve, your emotions and moods will get better, you will have more positive thinking, and you will have more power in the choices you make.
We will use treatments that are based on research and have been proven to work. I am trained in a variety of these approaches, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mentalization-based treatment (MBT), good psychiatric management (GPM), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), prolonged exposure (PE), and twelve-step facilitation (TSF).
I completed my masters and doctorate at Harvard University, my predoctoral training at McLean Hospital, an internship at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Chicago DBT Institute.
